Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:
Can’t I just moderate my site with filtering software?
People can always find ways to work around filtering software — if you receive spam, you know that. Filtering software is highly sophisticated, but it’s just that—software. Filters are very efficient for going through large volumes of content but they don’t replace the discretion, understanding and knowledge of a human moderator.
Are you censoring?
No, we aren’t. The First Amendment guarantees the right to free speech, but when users give their consent by entering into a Terms of Service Agreement (TOS), they agree to comply with your posting guidelines. Moderation is a process of reviewing for content that doesn’t comply with the TOS. Moderators don’t reject content based on their own political or religious views, only on what is spelled out for users in the TOS. You set the parameters and Scout enforces them.
I have a social media campaign that may have spikes of activity. Can I bank hours when there are lulls in activity?
Yes. We will work flexibly with you to make sure your needs are met. At the outset of every project, there are a lot of unknown factors. Variables such as traffic and volume are hard to predict at any time in the world of social media. Scout will start out with a certain number of moderators and then pull in or scale back based on your site’s average traffic. Scout works with your team to get you the coverage you need, when you need it, so that your peaks and valleys are always covered.
Am I at legal risk for hosting social media on my site?
Lots of web sites invite users to post comments, pictures, or videos, but there are risks involved. There are three U.S. regulations that affect your liability for third party, or user-generated, content: The Digital Millennium Copyright Act; the Communications Decency Act; and the Safe Harbor Provision.
